OpenAI launches conversational “Sponsored Agents” ads and ties ChatGPT Ads into HubSpot and Shopify

OpenAI has introduced a new advertising format inside ChatGPT called Sponsored Agents, which let a user click an ad and open a separate, clearly labeled chat with a brand’s own AI agent to ask follow-up questions before being routed to the company’s website. Alongside the test, OpenAI announced its first CRM and ecommerce integrations, connecting ChatGPT Ads to HubSpot and to Shopify’s merchant tools, and rolled out natural-language campaign creation and AI-assisted ad copy and imagery inside Ads Manager. You can read the full announcement in OpenAI’s post.

This is OpenAI formalizing something it’s been building toward for a year: turning ChatGPT into a genuine advertising platform rather than a chatbot that occasionally shows a sponsored link. The pilot already includes Wayfair and the home-services marketplace Angi, and reports suggest OpenAI’s ad business has grown from nothing to roughly a billion-dollar annualized run rate in well under a year. That’s a meaningful business signal for a company still burning enormous amounts of capital on compute — advertising gives OpenAI a lower-friction revenue lever than subscriptions alone.

The more interesting design choice is the “agent-as-ad” format itself. Instead of a static banner or a plain sponsored answer, users get handed off into a separate conversation explicitly run by the advertiser’s own AI, which is unambiguously trying to sell them something. OpenAI’s bet is that a labeled, opt-in conversation feels less manipulative than a search ad — but it also blurs a line ChatGPT has spent years establishing: that the assistant answering your question isn’t the one trying to close a sale. Competitors like Google have run ads inside AI surfaces for a while, and Perplexity has experimented with sponsored answers, but this conversational hand-off to a brand-controlled agent is a distinct step further into commerce territory.

For developers and small businesses, the practical upside is real: plugging ChatGPT Ads into HubSpot and Shopify removes a lot of the friction that kept AI advertising out of reach for anyone without an agency. The caveat worth flagging is trust. OpenAI insists sponsored agents are clearly separated from ChatGPT’s own answers, but “sponsored” labels have a long, mixed history of actually registering with users on any platform that’s tried them — this is a pilot worth watching for how well that boundary actually holds up in practice.
