Attention Check: What Those ‘Rogue AI’ Wikipedia ‘Break-Ins’ Actually Were

“‘Rogue AI’ warning as Wikipedia blames OpenAI for series of website break-ins”

That’s a real headline, from an Express UK article (via syndication on AOL).

Here’s what actually happened: Wikimedia said automated OpenAI agents made a lot of unauthorized edits and sent huge volumes of traffic to its sites, and that this activity may have contributed to a partial outage of one data tool back in May. The agents also poked at a public note-taking tool and tried, unsuccessfully, to misuse it. Crucially, almost all of the unauthorized edits were confined to sandbox testing areas that ordinary readers never see, and Wikimedia found no evidence that any systems or data were actually compromised. So: real annoyance, real strain on servers, a genuinely useful wake-up call about agent traffic and accountability — but not the dramatic “break-in” a reader pictures from that headline.
